An Introduction to ShipSafeShipSafe's mission is to secure international container shipments from the
terrorist threat without impeding the flow of commerce. This is a task of monumental
importance to both our security and our economy. The Economist estmates that "over 15 million containers are moving at sea or
on land, or are standing in yards waiting to be delivered."
70,000 TEU containers arrive in over 360 ports each day in
the United States alone. A year post 9/11, only about 5% of these incoming
containers are being inspected. On the other hand, a one day's increase in the
supply chain of Wal-Mart would entail an additional $500,000,000 in investment.
Cass Information has estimated that if the "Just In Time" inventory advances of
the last 20 years were undone that overall inbound inventories to the US would
grow by a trillion dollars. These are staggering sums, sure to impact every US
citizen and trade volumes are generally predicted to double over the next decade! As technologist and logisticians we at ShipSafe are keenly aware that the levels
of security, efficiency, and cost must be carefully balanced to successfully
address the terrorist threat. We are convinced that all containers must be
monitored for the sake of security, but that only a few need to be sidelined
for detailed inspection. Technology's capabilities and cost are constantly
improving. To accomplish our mission we are dedicated to finding and maintaining
the technological "sweet spot" that provides affordable protection with the least
disruption to supply chains.
